The album has sold 4,274,300 copies in Britain, meaning it is now the fifth best-selling album of all time in the UK.

Are you suggesting that all of those purcahsers are also not in their right mind???

Personally don't own the album but like a couple of the tracks off it.

I would be interested in how many of those were bought by men though.

It's a bit like saying its ok for you to like Justin Bieber because he has sold a lot of records.

It's not though, is it.....

Adele's album is quantifiably acceptable to the public. Men liking cats is not. Face it, you're a queer (in the olde time-y sense) foreign chap and I'm a perfectly decent Englishman who happens to count among his musical proclivities the stylings of the most talented and revered British artist for a decade.

It is now, in album sales, more popular than Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd.

Do we think 21 is a better album than one of the most revered albums of all time?

I think the reason for its popularity is mainly down to what else is around at the moment, and let's face it, popular music is awful these days.

You can only beat what's put in front of you. I like DSOTM as much as the next sane man, in fact, it's one of just two albums on Earth where I like every single track.
However, having sold that number of albums today makes it all the more impressive. Imagine how many she'd have sold in the pre-PirateBay days. I reckon if she's sold 5.5m (guess this is hard copies and iTunes), there must be 20m copies out there, which is utterly staggering.
Still, regardless, great album.

I'm not so sure you'll find there will be 15 million downloads of her album, Matt. She's the type that appeals to the Middle-Aged Housewife type, the same type who bought that Soldier's Wives thingy at Christmas. They aren't the type to sit around on torrent software downloading music illegally. I'd say the figure would be doubled, max.

My earlier point was though, I don't think this is really that good a reflection on the music industry these days. You don't have the Enya's, the Sarah Brightman's, the Elton John's, the Tom Jones' the Cliff Richard's constantly releasing housewife music, or "Respectable Pop" as I once heard it coined. Other than Adele, what else is there? The Military Wives fad has been and gone, now we also have... err... err... err... Michael Buble and Maroon 5 but even they have gone off course somewhat. Music is incredibly rubbish these days, you'd think that 90% of the population was of another ethnicity to the natural White British.

How much an album has sold is never down to how 'good' it is. It's down to marketing. Call me a cynic.

I'm technically one of those 5million people though. Bought it on vinyl for my girlfriend last year.

Genuinely strong voice, writes most of the material. Not your typical 'pop star'. Not a fan at all, but I can at least see the appeal.

im a middle aged woman, yes i did buy adele on the strength of a song thta was a cover from bob dylan anyway!!..i now never play it! enough said..i really dont think 30 yrs on ppl will be talking about adele like they do about pink floyd...unless u r matt of course...and as for the military wives...send them to afghanistan to join their husbands!!!!
