Interesting to note, too, the population sizes of the four towns involved:

Torquay 64,000
Crewe 68,000
Cheltenham 115,000
Southend 165,000

Actually the Gulls' catchment population within a ten-mile radius is currently more like 192000, but given the absolutely dire and disgracefully poor availability of public transport in the area, combined with high unemployment and low incomes, it's not surprising that Plainmoor gates are comparatively low.

Interesting to note that during good economic times, during the sixties for example, gates were substantially higher than they are now, although the total population was much smaller.

During the sixties and seventies Football was loked upon as entertainment and there wasnt a great else to do unlike now where there is a much wider choice of things to do and hobbies to follow. I can remember at Eastville where 10,000 was looked upon as a bad crowd and local matches ie Plymouth saw crowds of 20,000. I have in fact found that in 1966-67 season we played yourselves at Eastville and won 1-0 with a crowd of 10,902 but amazingly and please correct me if this is an error but we lost at Torquay 2-1 in the return match with an Easter crowd of 14,171!!. In the following season when we were doing slightly better we beat you 1-0 at home with 19,470 and again lost away 2-0 and your crowd was 11,401. Oh what memories!! I can even remember playing Arsenal ast Eastville witha crowd of 35,420. In fac t going back to 1953-54 (which is before my time!!) and 19,00 was the lowest home gate all season with the highest gate being over 35,000.
What is your highest home attendance? What was your highest capacity? Just out of interest and not trying to get bragging rights.

Highest attendance is 21,908. 1955 vs Huddersfield.

We did use to average a lot more than we do now!

The good old days! I think our highest gates, before my time, were FA Cup matches against Huddersfield in 1955 when we lost 0-1 in round 4 (att. 21908) and Tottenham Hotspur (1965) when we drew 3-3 in round 3 (att. 20000). In the days before 'elf'n safety rules..

Yes the crowd figures are correct friendlygas although you didn't mention the two stonewall penalties that weren't seen by the men in black (as they always were then!) at Eastville which should have given us the double in 1966/67. Our attendance against the Rovers was our highest home gate of the season (and our nearest 'derby'), but our highest overall attendance that season was 27,160 at Ayresome Park against Middlesbrough. We had an impressive 1000 away supporters but we weren't even noticed in that crowd! A very tight finish that season as had we won rather than lost our last two games we would have gone up instead of Middlesbrough, but as it was we finished 7th and the Rovers finished 5th. Strange looking back on it .... there was never a problem getting in or getting a ticket if they were deemed necessary!!

Simon Baker,,,, for he will be the only person who truely gets what he wants.

So Torquay has the smallest population of the lot, after seeing that I would love to see most of them going to Wembley and it just to be a sea of yellow shirts. Good luck
