Following on from the other 'top 5' threads I thought this would be interesting.
1. The Shawshank Redemption - simply magnificent.
2. Star Wars stuff...
3. Lord of the Rings stuff
4. Notting Hill
5. Love Actually
(6. Saving Private Ryan)
I realise my 4 and 5 are somewhat less butch than my other options but deal with it.
I will now open the floor up to you lot...

Cambgull's the only one so far to provide a half-decent selection. I would go for:
1. Bicycle Thieves
2. Brief Encounter
3. The Third Man
4. La Strada
5. The Bridge on the River Kwai
6. Ben Hur
7. The Leopard
8. Cinema Paradiso
9. Gandhi
10. Tom and Jerry
Yep, it's ten not five. Don't care..

Obviously i can see that both Luke and GS have a secret affinity with my beloved Austrian capital Vienna as The Illusionist was shot there (lukes choice) and The Third Man was too (GS choice)!! Well done lads!

I thought the backdrop to those films looked distinctly... average.

He made one great film, & you didn't see him again

You talking about Carol Reed who directed The Third Man? He also made films such as Fallen Idol, The Agony and the Ecstasy (film about Michelangelo), and the musical Oliver, which also won Oscars.
By the way, great city, Vienna. Love their New Year's Day concerts. But did you notice that four of my choice were Italian films..?

Oh you mean Gandhi..?
There was an old man called Gandhi
who went into a bar for a shandy.
He used his loincloth
to mop up the froth,
and the barman said 'that's very handy.'

In no particular order:
1. All the Rambo films
2. All the Terminator films
3. Casablanca
4. Time Travellers Wife
5. Brief Encounter
6. Seven Pounds
That's also more than 5, but it depends on whether I'm in weepy or violent mood as to which I would choose as a fave
