Been clogging up threads left, right and centre with this question, so thought I'd do it its own.

I'm only asking out of interest: where did you go to uni, what did you study and how did you do?

Further question - those of you that went to Uni, have you used your qualification to get you the job you wanted?

I know of so many people that went to Uni, studied some useless subject for three or four years then worked in finance, at a lower level than me. I didn't bother going to Uni - I instead chose to study whilst working. My work pay for the Diplomas and I get paid to study.

Win win for me.

Never used it. Realised that I should be doing something computery was limited as to the choices I had (basically, Biochemistry, Biology or Chemistry).

Think it speaks to a broader problem with regard to higher education in UK. You're too specialised and often some pretty basic skills get ignored. e.g. most university grads will not have done any English or Maths since GCSE (because you don't do those at A level if you don't think you'll need them at Uni). I quite like what they do in the US - you have a 4 degree and the first year is pretty much all "core curriculum" stuff - English, Maths, a bit of science I think (some make you do a foreign language). It's not until you start the second that you really have to decide your major. Think this is much better because it gives you more time to get into the college experience before being tied down to a subject.

That's not to suggest the system is perfect, of course - many schools - especially if yuo want to go out-of-state are really expensive. And of course, even with the English classes they still can't spell "colour"

Went to Uni really to toss it off for 3 years and get free money. (joke)

Starting next month. Doing Primary teaching.

Going in just over a week to study Mental Health Nursing at Swansea

After a careers talk at school I thought the construction industry would be a good move and did a BSc in Building at the Polytechnic of Wales (although I ended up graduating from the University of Glamorgan). The industry was in the best of health when I started in 1988 but by the time the course finished in 1992 there was a recession on and no-one was hiring. I haven't set foot on a building site since and now work in IT.

Knew after 2 days I wouldn't use my accountancy 'skillz' and tried to switch to a law course, but failed. Have studied law since though.
