Absolutely shocking decision by Cortese. After what he managed to do in a little over 2 and a half yesrs he should have been allowed to carry on with full backing from the board.

I hope they get relegated. 2 promotions and out of the bottom 3 in the PL is a great effort by Adkins.

I'd like to say unbelievable but nothing is that in football anymore. Sad really. The bizarre thing is Adkins had started to improve the results gradually and have got out of the drop zone and with this greater confidence they could have pulled clear over the next few months. Now it's all thrown into disarray with a new bloke who probably doesn't know the league and can't speak a word of the Queens. I can sort of understand getting rid of Adkins as a panic move if come the end of Feb they were deeply entrenched in the bottom 3 but to do it now when they are picking up form is insane. The powers that be will all wonder why it went t*ts up when Saints end up back in the Championship now. Crazy.

sounds like they've been ready with the next guy for a while. If you sack somebody and hire somebody on the same day, clearly there have been machination behind the scenes for a while.

Southampton came from 2 goals down to draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge just on wednesday

Nicola Cortese, an Italian banker, organised the takeover of Southampton by German Markus Liebherr in 2009, who appointed Cortese as chairman, and almost immediately Alan Pardew (now at Newcastle) was appointed as manager.

Pardew took Southampton to a League One promotion challenge despite a 10-point deduction and took them to a League Trophy final in May 2010 in which Southampton beat Carlisle 4-1. The win gave the club their first trophy since 1976.
Five months later Pardew was dismissed by the club amidst reports of low staff morale and conflicts between Pardew and chairman Cortese, after which Nigel Adkins was appointed manager.

After Adkins took the club to two successive promotions, for the club to avoid relegation in its first Premier League season would and should be regarded by most people in football as a success. But not, it seems, by Leibherr and Cortese, who know little of English football and even less about the Premier League. And their appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as manager on practically the same day as the sacking of Nigel Adkins stinks to high heaven.

Adkins will have no trouble finding another club. Southampton will be fortunate, with these foreigners in charge, to survive two successive relegations. It's a pity they can't be booted out of the country. Europeans are ruining the UK. We should leave the European Union at the earliest opportunity. After all, practically half of Australia's foreign trade is with China, but you don't hear the Aussies calling for closer economic and political ties with the Chinese...

Markus Liebherr is dead and shouldn't be judged in the same way as Cortese.

Simply on the of the wrost footballing decisions I have ever seen/read about, no way anyone can justify this, in any way. Smacks of the old pal network. Out of work football coach needing a job and room being made for at a club where he may or may not as the case may be know the chairman possibly.

I attach a photo of the message left by Adkins to the players. Class act IMHO.

Is that genuine SG?! A true gent, and one of the few football managers to ever quote poetry in a press conference. He won't have any problem finding another job.

It was taken by an ex-Saint who is a personal friend so I am pretty sure it is and have no reason to doubt him.

Just found the story online as well Dave. Thanks for sharing that.

It's confirmed everything I had originally thought about Adkins and doubled it. As you quite rightly say, a class act.
