Matchday threads

Post by AustrianAndyGull »

I'm running a poll on your views for the matchday threads. I appreciate that some of you will find them good to read and some of you will be sick of having to trawl through endless pages of banality to get to the crux of the thread - the football match itself.

I've had some very positive comments from a wide variety of users for which i extend my gratitude but some not so and at the end of the day, all i want to do is provide something which is a generally acceptable format so that you guys can get something out of them and encourages further posts about the game.

As i've said before, contrary to popular belief, i DO have a life and i'm quite happy putting in the time and effort to do the threads although when the games come thick and fast it can be a squeeze, but if most of you aren't fussed then i don't want to be wasting my time unecessarily. I am quite happy to do the threads just concentrating on the game itself, the opposition, players, refs and stats and leave out the childish stuff. This would mean a permanent end to the now famous, 'Town of the Day' though so really think hard. :na:

Anyway, please do vote and i shall act upon ( or not depending on the results ) it. Thanks all. :-D

MODS: I've put this on the main board as i thought it relevant to TUFC and the users of the site but please feel free to move it if you think it necessary, cheers.

Poll runs for 2 days so i can then start the thread for York.
Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.

It's all good to me Andy. Your matchday threads always make interesting reading and I love it when you go off on a rant and completely forget about the preview.

Nothing wrong with that in my mind and you shouldn't even have to justify yourself to the few that don't like it. They can just skip your first post or write their own bleeding article! The cheek of it!

More of the same please.

Voted to leave them as they are, the Southend match thread made me  Loved it, only thing you might consider trying to shorten them a little as not all will read right through such long posts.

Cheers for the kind comments and advice Dave and and Steve  I thought this the best way for people to have a democratic vote on what is essentially 'forced' upon them by me. There will be a few of the older generation, and indeed younger generation out there who don't really understand too much of it or take offence to the courseness and bad language and it's not for them at all. That's fine. We're all different but at least this gives them an opportunity to have a say in what they want. I'm sure if someone like me did a thread and based it around metal music and took the p*ss out of it all the way through as a theme or something then i'd not be greatly pleased about it but if someone did a thread based on Alan Partridge and Bottom with quotes running all the way through i'd understand it, love it and find it hilarious. Maybe an idea! :ping: :~D ( just secured another 20 votes for the 'against' camp! ).

If anyone has any suggestions as to anything else they may want to see in a matchday thread then please do say so on here and i'll see what i can do. Like links to the oppositions o/s or grounds guide or whatever just to make things easier.

It's all quite simple Andy. Just split the threads into two:

The Official Matchday Thread, and:
The Alternative Matchday Thread.

Only please ensure that each introduction you post is only half as long as the current ones.... =D

for gods sake please leave the matchday threads as they are. :-o they are funny, interesting and informative. they have actually cheered me up at a time when every upcoming game fills me with dread, pessimism and worry. :( at least we can see some humour, in a season that has been far from funny. :)
You are my torquay, my only torquay, you make me happy when skies are grey, you'll never know, just, how much i love you, so don't take my torquay away.

Well I was one, and I'll manage to refrain from criticising others for having an opinion if thats ok.

I personally don't read the matchday threads, just contribute from the match if I can. For me, reading something like the match preview I think was on a Gillingham fan-site would be of more interest, but thats just my personal opinion.

Andy - lots of people love your match threads, so if you want to keep writing them you go for it. It makes no difference to me!

Thanks Jeff and i won't hold it against you for voting for the football! ;-)

I've had a look at the Gillingham match previews and if you mean on the Gillsconnect.com site then i have to agree it's mindblowing and visually magnificent.

The thing with our threads and that thread is that mine are specifically done just for the forum for people to have a general read, hopefully a laugh and get some basic info on the game. We could obviously do with somebody putting up something like that for each game on the main site page full of photos and links and stuff but we don't have anyone out there with the time or inclination to do all that stuff and put it into such a quality, informative package that the Gills bloke has done.
Mine take time but those must take forever.

In addition, people have complained that my threads are too long winded but even without the inane ramblings there is often a lot of information to compile and convey and if i were to go into much greater detail about footy based info then the thread would still be mightily long and people would still say it's too much. The thread on the Gillsconnect.com sites are also very long and although great reading there is still a load of info to take on board.

I think there are categories of people out there, the ones like me that are a bit loony and nutty and like childish humour but also love the footy too, then ones who are possibly football connoiseurs and will appreciate a site that does threads like the Gillsconnect one and want to concentrate on the footy only, and the ones who aren't bothered either way.

I think to have a 'professional' match day preview on our main site page ( and not something randomly thrown together by a crazy amateur =D ) would be superb and i'd read it but it's getting someone with the computer skills, the time and willingness to do it which we don't seem to have.

My threads really are just for the forum and for us load of idiots to post stuff about the game, i am in no way professing to be as intelligent and knowledgable about the game than the people who do the other clubs threads. In fact some clubs threads just have a bloody title - like - York City v Port Vale and then there is no introduction, nothing, just a title for people to add to so at the very least i offer some info and angles on the game.

Cheers anyway Jeff. :-D

The latest Star Wars themed one tipped the scales in the 'leave as they are' side for me!

Do whatever you want though Andy! No one is going to complain! It's just good of you to want to do it all the time!

Andy

I am all for keeping the threads as they are - they always bring a smile to my face

Not sure about my "alter ego" - Torquay Tony' s viewpoint may be different though as his personal habits are revealed

{1 Vote added} One was me, I simply prefer to know all the football knowledge, a great idea would be to split it. It isn't me being 'Dull', just I see it as a football match day thread so why not use the banter board for what its here for.
