BBC Sport reporting that he's been sacked by Southend. Don't know what to make of it getting to the JPT final in my opinion should have definitely allowed to him have another season but I guess in terms of league position it's below Southend's expectations...

Just one of a number of crazy dismissals of football managers this season, one of the worst of which to my mind was Adkins at Southampton.
I'm told Southend have won only four games in the league this year, but they've had horrendous injuries, and Sturrock has got them to their first ever Wembley cup final. So it's impossible to understand his leaving. Absolutely ludicrous!

heard southend fans on talksport earlier. seems like none of them wanted him to go, they are quite unhappy and dont understand it.
the best bit is he has left but is coming back next month to be in charge for the johnstones paint trophy final. :-o
never heard anything like it.

As a result of events this year at Plainmoor, a few Gulls fans have been making the odd criticism of our board and chairman! In view of what goes on at other clubs, we should count ourselves extremely fortunate to have Baker & Co in charge here...!

Yeah, our managers drink themselves into oblivion (no names, not Lingy, obviously) waaaaaaaay before the Board can sack them.
This Sturrock thing is madness. Why does [almost] every club in this division think they're too good for L2? Southend are a good L2 side but nothing so special that they ought to be sacking a manager in their position. They've had a couple of cracks at L1 recently and they can't hack it. Time to accept that L2 is their level and they need to do something better to progress, not simply sack the manager and whinge about how they're stuck in the wrong division.
Matt.

Sturrock has been given the opportunity to return to manage the side in the Wembley final. Bit weird.
Normally i would say that he has failed in his job because he got the sack so why should he get the chance to return and lead the team out at Wembley just because he got them there? However, on this occasion i believe it's a nice touch and i think Sturrock is possibly a victim of the syndrome in which many fans think the manager should be doing better than he is and the club should be doing better than they are. Yes they've got some very good players but they've also got some bang average ones too and Southend fans should lower their expectations a little IMO.

Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.
2006 they were crowned League 1 champions, there first season back in League 1 after relegation they narrowly missed out on promotion straight back to the Championship beaten in the play-off final by Doncaster.ferrarilover wrote:Yeah, our managers drink themselves into oblivion (no names, not Lingy, obviously) waaaaaaaay before the Board can sack them.

As a general point, think they do have a right to think they should atleast be in League 1 and Luggy llooks like he is no capable of getting them there, think Southend have got this right.

agree with that dave.
although as we know any of the leagues are not only hard to get out of - but also to stay in once you are promoted!

No football team has a right to think they should be in any particular League. You are where you on merit - or lack of - and nothing can change that. It really annoys me when teams think the 'deserve' to be in a higher league because they have history or a large fanbase behind them.forevertufc wrote:As a general point, think they do have a right to think they should atleast be in League 1 and Luggy llooks like he is no capable of getting them there, think Southend have got this right.

Phil 'The Man From Del Monte' Brown will find league 2 a bit of a comedown from Hull although Southend ad Hull are both similar in terms of they are both cesspits so he should settle in pretty quickly as he was used to Hull. This was a man who turned down clubs because they didn't match his ambition and now he's in the bottom league with a club who are skint. UMMMMMMMMM.

Agreed, you are where you are merit. All I am saying is Southend as a club feel they should be in a higher league and if their board has no faith in there manager to get them back to that level then they do have the right to move on and give someone else a go.
Every time a manager gets sacked there is allways some one somewhere crying foul, it is the nature of football every time soemone signs up as a manager they know they are only as good as their last result, trouble is for Sturrock he was given plently of backing, after all Benyon was there 8th chioce striker and when your backed with money you have to deliver, he did not.
Truoble is we are just to god damn soft, we give a manager a 1 year rolling contract apparently with no end date, some then tell us that is sound sensilbe practise, so we now have a manager who knows the club can not afford to pay him the 1 years compo and can sit tight for as long as he wants.
