Not that interested in who replaces him. As for the man himself though, I think he has shown that he is one of (if not the) best football manager ever. His record is excellent and he always shows a real passion for his club. I always enjoyed watching how he behaved at games and in TV interviews. If anybody crossed him then he just cut them adrift, tough as old boots.

Best there is and best there ever will be. Will never be surpassed and will remain the greatest football manager who has ever lived.

Ling?

The best manager that has ever lived. To keep shedding players and adding players season after season ( albeit money no object ) and to keep at the top of the tree is remarkable. What is more remarkable is that managing players today with their money, flash cars, attitude and ipods is a world away from the lifestyle of players when he first started yet he has managed to adapt to the changing environment around him rather than stick to an archaic plan and stay stuck in the past (like Ling actually).

United fans will want Mourinho but Sir Alex will have a big say in whose chosen as his successor and might prefer Moyes ?

Mourinho if United want two to three years of him being a mardy tw*t, alienating everyone and also making the small number of football fans who don't hate man utd at the moment start to.

Moyes to continue where Fergie left off with minimal disruption and to ensure the continued success of United which is sustainable.

As much as i dislike Man Utd, i dislike Mourinho even more and i thoroughly respect and admire the job Moyes has done at Everton so i think it should go to him for a change and balls to Jose.

Will probably be Moyes but I feel sorry for whoever it is. You don't want to be the guy who replaces that guy. You want to give it a few years and be the guy who replaces the guy who replaced that guy.

SAF signed an average of exactly 4 players per season for the time he was there (104 signings in 26 years). I don't have any representative comparables (not strictly the right word), but I'll bet this was a large part of the key to his success. Making subtle changes to the squad to tailor his options to the style of football best adopted for any given season. Unlike Man City, who just sign as many players as possible for as much money as possible then try to form them into some sort of vague team, Ferguson targets a style and buys accordingly. SAF is a dentist's drill, Manchini is a wrecking ball. That is why City have had their day and United have been at the top for over 20 years.

Who next? Who knows? Maybe Mourinho, although I'm not convinced he is the right man for United, who prefer to win 5-4 than 1-0 (probably rules out Ling too, sadly). Moyes, lovely, but not accustomed to having a budget. Perhaps a foreigner, someone like the Dortmund coach, or the outgoing Munich manager?

Matt is right on the United/City comparison.

Ferguson built a team whereas City bought good players. Apparently (don't ask me to find the stat) but City have spent more in the last 5 years that United have since 1993 AND United have recouped almost 3 times as much from outgoing transfers.
