What I want to know is:

I've just started getting into cricket and I want to know if Devon CCC (who are minor counties) could ever be promoted into the main 2 divisions and if not why not and if not what is the point as I don't fully understand it.

The same reason, I guess, why the Sunday league "Dog and Duck" football team will never play in the Premier League.

Doesn't make sense Scott. Surely each county has a cricket team like say Cumbria or Norfolk and they one day aspire to be in with the big boys as it were like Yorkshire obviously . Otherwise county cricket is a bit incomplete if not every county has a chance at progressing.

Wikipedia (for all its critics) does have a very good explanation for the difference between minor county cricket and "first class" cricket if you really do want to know the answer to your question in layman terms.

Also does anyone know of any alternative music shops in Yorkshire / Derbyshire / Lincolnshire selling music t-shirts. I need one for Saturday and there are p*ss all that I can find. I can go online but nobody does next day delivery. Long shot but if anyone knows of any or knows of anyone down in Devon who could get the thing sent up by Saturday then that would be superb.

The answer to your question Andy, is yes Devon could become a major county cricket club, but not via promotion in the sense of football. They would have to apply for first class status, the last club do this was Durham CCC in 1991.

All true, and Durham have been very successful. Such a story is likely to be very rare though because of the financial position of county cricket. Most Premiership football clubs would be able to generate enough income through gate receipts alone to be able to run a club with a sensible pay bill, but they use the vast riches from TV money to pay their players huge salaries and therefore don't need to have a sensible pay bill. County cricket gate receipts are pitifully low, and could barely cover the costs of a part-time team. It is funding from the England and Wales Cricket Board that keeps county teams afloat (test match TV money etc.), and I can't imagine that the other counties will welcome a new entrant to share a fixed pot of cash, unless that county had something special (money!!) to offer. Sadly Devon doesn't have this financial advantage, although it does have lovely places to come and play (would you rather play in Middlesborough or Exmouth?).

Can anyone recommend any camp sites in Devon? My requirements are very specific, I need somewhere that doesn't allow music to be played, somewhere where there is plenty of space to pitch without hearing your neighbours on one side having it off and neighbours on the other swearing all night and somewhere aimed at people who just want to have a quiet beer and look at fields / sea. It can be coastal or countryside I don't mind so long as it is a quiet family site with no louts.

Owned and run by John Bull and his family, all ardent TUFC fans and it's a very chilled and laid back place to stay. Camping is pretty cheap compared to others in the area. No drinking places on site although plenty of good pubs a few miles drive away. Personally, I like it because it's quiet and peaceful and if I want anything there's a big Sainsbury's close-by and it's easy to drive to Plainmoor

I'm going to put this in here since nobody answered my own thread

I'm going to getting to the Bay on July 26th, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to need some sort of vehicular conveyance. Does anybody know of anywhere that will rent me a car for fairly cheap? My budget is pretty limited. I'd need it until the 31st.

Alternatively, if anybody has a spare car they could let me borrow for a few days, that'd be cool too I have not one, but TWO driving licenses.

Enterprise were good to me when I needed a car fora couple of days. There was a cock up (admin thing, nothing harmful), so got the 4 day weekend plus pick up and drop off for about £12. Without the extra apology discount, they were still cheapest, because they did a price beater.

Just a couple of things which I'm sure you're already on top of: your DL is still valid in the UK and there is no way you could have been disqualified in your absence since your last visit? (You laugh, I've seen it happen).

I don't think so. But I actually only have the counterfoil bit. The picture license perished in an unfortunate washing machine incident. I do have a US license, though.

Stowford Farm Meadow in North Devon is good. Massive pitches and family friendly. We go there a couple of times every year and have never had a bad experience.

It's an hour and a half from Plainmoor though, so perhaps out of the question if you're down for a game.
