Basically the AA bloke reckons my turbo diesel charger thingy has some seals broken so that the propeller thingy is sucking up oil into my engine and chuffing out smoke and also causing me to lose acceleration. Does anyone know what the frig i'm on about and how much will it cost to fix? He is talking about scrapping a £1000 car as it may cost that to fix if it is an exact diagnosis.

if its only the seals then it can be repaired fairly cheaply.....you must have a local specialist nearby even in that sh*thole of derbyshire! =D

Cheers guys, i'm considering getting it fixed anyway even if it is 5,6,7,800 quid. I can't afford to get a new 'old' car and I've had a lot of new parts replaced in this one so it would be a waste to scrap it and it may be best fixing it. Obviously i'll ring round and it might not be as worse as first feared but one thing is for sure, it's f*cked my trip down to Plainmoor on Saturday up. Can you believe that out of the last 4 games I've planned a trip down and bought my tickets I've only been able to see 1 game?! The 1-1 draw v Northampton just before Crimbo last year. The 4-3 Aldershot game I was on holiday in Devon and got ill, the Wycombe night game lost 2-1 last season I got ill and now this weekend! Bloody hell!!

I did type a proper reply, but this **** ing ridiculous site logged me out while I was doing so, so it was lost to the ages.

Basically, push it into a ditch, claim you were run off the road by a guy who sped off. You'll get a write off price for the car, plus a nice chunk of compensation for the whiplash you can claim to have. This'll give you more than enough to buy a nice new motor and have sufficient left over to enjoy a few away games.

Of course I couldn't do what you are suggesting as it is dishonest and those days are well behind me now. =D

The cost of car insurance is dishonest and they've been doing it to you for years. See car insurance like a savings scheme. You pay in your few hundred quid a year, then, when you're a bit short and need a new motor (or money for plastic surgery, or whatever), then you make a claim to cash in your investment.

They offer a fixed penalty now for no insurance. £300 and 6 points. I can see even that being a tempting option. Road traffic policing is all to cock anyway, if the rules were universally enforced, I'd pick up about 30 points a day. There was a thing on the Jeremy Vine show about 3 years ago about people who have exactly the same story as you. They drive about uninsured and just take the chance. Fortunately, my premium is about £200 these days, so no need to risk it.

Matt I deleted my earlier post incase folk got the wrong end of the stick. Can I just re-iterate that I have been fully legal for 13 years now and wouldn't dream of breaking the law anymore. I got caught all those years ago and took the consequences although they weren't a deterrent.

So, you've been driving for around 23/24 years. Do you mind my asking why you didn't pass your test until your early forties?

I've been a driver for about 20 years. I passed my test at 17/18 and it was the first year that the new theory test came in and I shat myself as i'd never passed an exam in my life up until I took it. I had just left secondary school with two B's in English Lang and Lit primarily because there was no exam only coursework and the clever teacher knowing what a tool I was a school strategically sat me next to the class genius (and bore) each lesson so my opportunities for f*cking about were reduced to zero. Outcome, I concentrated and passed.

I failed all the other exams I bothered to turn up to.

So my concern about the theory was understandable. Even worse than the test itself was that I did it in Sc*nthorpe!

It's getting towed today to the garage and they'll do it for £600 - £800. It will take until Friday. In the meantime it is costing me £15 a day to get my daughter to school and back as we live 12 miles from her school. We have to get a taxi to the train station, hang around for the train, get the train which only takes 7 minutes to be fair and then get off and hang around at school for 25 minutes. Then I've got to come home and do it all over again to pick her up! Madness, it takes 4 hours out of my day just getting her to and from school. Cars are a pain in the arse but they are essential.
