Whilst I was not surprised to hear today that Tom Daley is gay, I assumed he was. I was more than surprised to hear him come out.
There most be 100's of footballers who have never had the guts to come out as gay, bar Justin Fashanu of course. Perhaps this action alone could lead to one of the last taboo's of football being finally broken?

Why 'must' there be 100s of gay footballers?
Matt.

I Tweeted exactly the same thing, Andy.
This shit was on the BBC News for **** sake.
If he'd released a video announcing that he had a girlfriend, it wouldn't even have made the OK Magazine gossip column.
What difference does it make that he's got a boyfriend?
Matt.

doesn't seem to me that the guy 'came out', really. He just said he was in a relationship with a man. Doesn't necessarily make him gay. He could be bisexual, or, hell, maybe he's just a 19 year old lad who's had to grow up in the public eye and he's just exploring his own sexuality before deciding.
Incidentally, it's a real double standard that when girls through an 'experimental' phase at university, or whatever, that's all totally cool and apparently kind of sexy but a man doing the same thing at a similar point in life, and he's just told to 'pick a side'.

Well that was shock of the century wasnt it, Tom Daley being gay or at least bisexual, who would have thought it. :}
Bit un-nerving really because it proves my gaydar works.
Anyway, here we are yet again, somebody feels they have to tell the world their sexual preferences, oh my arent they brave, oh how wonderful.
I still dont get why people feel they have to tell everybody, like we all care and really need to know.
Us hetros dont go around saying to everybody, "Oh im straight by the way". If we went on straight pride marches or wore straight and proud tshirts we would be called Homophobic!
Ive noticed a double decker bus driving around the manor lately with a message from Stonewall saying -
"Some people are gay, Get over it!" Well all I can suggest to the likes of Stonewall is, the rest of us are well and truly over it and you clearly are not.

Ha, ha, last time I got involved with one of these threads, I incurred the wrath, of the sandal wearing, leftie Greenpeace atavists, and was accused on another site of being homophobic by the high and mighty who I suppose get a warm fuzzy feeling inside showing how tolerant they are.
Look fair play to the guy, doing that did take guts, would have easy for him hide it. But I repeat my message , nothing in football will change, whether like or not, running around a football stadium waving pink flags drinking Bacardi and coke isn't going to force Moyes to sign a gay player and play away to Man.C, nor Wenger to play a gay play at White Hart Lane., it would cause utter carnage.
If that makes me a homophobe and uneducated, then fine, so be it, I am. However I am tolerant, and personally couldn't give a flying fork if someone's gay or not.

That's exactly it. It's those who are desperate to show how tolerant they are (by making a song and dance about being overtly pro-homosexuality, I.e. congratulating every guy who comes out of the closet) who are actually the homophobes. Those of us who genuinely don't care, merely shrug and say 'ok, whatever' who are the truly tolerant ones. I took similar flak on the other site for being racist. Indeed, they made a real point of all saying how much they loved black guys and how much it didn't matter what colour people were... just so long as no one actually said that somepeople were black. ThIs is, to anyone with half a brain, stupid. Those of us who really couldn't care less about what colour people are feel free to mention it where it's appropriate, because it's descriptive, factually accurate or intrinsically relevant. Anyone who baulks at the mention does so because they see a difference between black and white, gay and straight, old and young etc.
Scotty said it best. There isn't a single example in history of a straight person announcing their heterosexuality to any kind of fanfare. Why? Because people don't care. To react differently to homosexuals in the name of equality is so bizarre that I can scarcely comprehend it and certainly cannot think of an analogy to do it justice.
Matt.
