Memories

Post by Nottsgull »

This is my first post on the site although I have been an avid reader for a long time.
I thought I would share a few memories both good and bad since my first visit to Plainmoor as a 14 year old in 1966 following my family's move to Brixham in August of that year.
1960s early 70s Good Times - my most vivid memories are of the 3-0 defeat of Bury in front of the MOTD cameras and a game against, I think, Scunthorpe in thick fog ( I can't remember the season ) when we scored twice in the last minute for a 2-1 win. A Jimmy Dunne header and I can't remember the other scorer. I also remember big crowds for home games against Bristol Rovers and Argyle. I also remember a sound thrashing of Walsall , was it 4 -0? When they were high in the table - John Rudge in his pomp?
Bad times- has to be the 6 0 reverse at Home Park on Boxing Day not just because of the defeat but someone nicked my bobble hat off my head and I bust the exhaust on my dad's car bombing along the A38.
Most Bizarre Game- the 0-0 draw at Field Mill against Mansfield the season Colin Lee kept us up. Both teams wearing almost identical kit!! How the ref allowed the game to be on is beyond me.
Best Fortnight Ever- November 2011. I got to 3 matches in consecutive weeks. Chesterfield 3-1 in the cup including Nicho's free kick, 3-0 at Crewe the following week and 3 -1 against Argyle at home with THAT GOAL from Eunan! 3 wins 9 goals for and 2 against. Brilliant!
I have to now admit I have not seen the current team. My last match was the 4 -3 reverse at Telford and very little, it seems has gone right since.
My best wishes go to the team and all you wonderfully loyal fans for the rest of the season. Miracles do happen!

Someone tell me more about this free kick against Chesterfield. I'm sure I was there, but I can't picture it.

Matt.

Aaah, the 6 -0 defeat at Home Park....they were definitely in a thieving mood that day Notts, cos they nicked my six foot scarf as well....but I was young & reasonably stupid so I ran after them & nicked it back again ! Then I got a police escort for my own safety !!!! Only other time I got a police escort 'in the ground' rather than 'outside the ground' was when we inadvertently were let into the Home End at Bournemouth & got an escort across the pitch ! Perhaps I'll do a short piece on police escorts for Highway to Hele fanzine........

The Nicho free kick was, I think, the 3rd goal. It was on the right side of the goal and right in front of the travelling Gulls' fans. I said to the friend I was with " Nicho has the best left foot in the bottom 2 divisions." She laughed! The next moment Nicho powered it into the top right hand corner of the goal. "You're right" my friend exclaimed.
