Hitching to Torquay
Barrow fan in peace. I just thought I'd share something I'm doing on Friday/Saturday to raise a bit of cash in a good cause.
This year, in order to raise money to support people who might otherwise not make Barrow AFC Home games, on August 12/13th I am undertaking a sponsored hitch hike to Torquay from Furness, under the auspices of the Bluebirds Trust.
All money raised will go to a match ticket 'fund which the Trust will administer. For example, £40 raised might pay for a class of local children to attend with their teachers, a couple of fans from a community group, someone who would like to go but needs a carer to come with them, a youth club prize, or just a family who have had a bit of a bad time and would like a day out. People can apply to Trust Tickets- we think this way we will get the maximum usage and also those that donated will get a real sense of where their tickets are going.
So, however small (even a £1 gets a child in) please do sponsor, there will be a link posted soon for folk who want to donate. If you would like to then if you Google Herbies Hitch Just Giving I'm sure it will come up.
Anyway, here's to a decent game. We enjoyed the visit last season although we won't have anything like the numbers this time, with most doing either you or Dover the following week, both away, we're looking forward to it again.

I remember the times we played Barrow in the Football League in my youth fifty or more years ago. Happy days. But then, as now, there were people who needed help and support from charitable good causes. This is one such good cause, and over the years Gulls fans have always been ready to dip into their pockets for a little extra spare cash despite all the other calls on their finances. Come on folks, even the smallest donations soon add up. We can do this. Watch out for the link..

Here's the link. I know you've not had your own troubles to seek, but any little bit would be a help and thanks.
Long time since we were the football league for sure!

A great and worthy cause and hats off to them for doing this is first.brucie wrote:Damn it. I thought we had a new signing.
Second is it me or is it another case of club doesn't give two shits syndrome? I mean Barrow hardly sell out every week so is it too much for them to stop these lads and lasses hiking to the other end of the country and just have a free match or two in a season letting in these kids and their parents and stuff?
Of course it's too much to ask. They are a lower league / conference football club and operate as one, just like Torquay et al. No interest in their supporters or local communities they claim to value so much.
Come on Barrow, just let them in for a game or two so long as it's done properly and all and sundry don't take the piss. It's a really really decent, good and helpful thing to do and you might not make any / much money from these new 'fans' but you'd be getting good PR, giving them a break in a hard hard life and that is the most important thing.
Third is Brucie. What a funny guy.

Andy post this as an e-mail to barrow FC . It's hardly our fault or the clubs fault this poor guy is cycling the length of the country for this match. Community links have significantly improved as late with nicho in charge. You just can't stay away can you, you have Torquay in your blood, hope your wellYorkieandy wrote: A great and worthy cause and hats off to them for doing this is first.

Hope all went well barrowaberdeen and you raised lots of cash. Good to see you are pro-ctively doing something positive to help people whilst your club sits in the background ready and waiting to take the proceeds of your dedicated well meaning endeavours without a speck of a guilty conscience.
Top man anyway and hope you didn't encounter too many oddballs along the way. Maybe if you'd continued into Cornwall then most definitely but hey, you're from Barrow so probably used to it. :na:
(joke man)
But seriously , hats off and it's a great story.![Great :-D](./images/smilies/great.gif)
Please do come back and let people know what happened and who benefitted and stuff. Cheers.

Thanks all, and especial thanks to Highway to Hele for your donation and anyone else who did.
Looks like we've raised/pledged about £1200 which is great.
Really enjoyed yesterday, like Torquay and Plainmoor is a good ground. We didn't really deserve a point, were abysmal first half but got a foothold in the game with the substitutions, you lost a bit of focus and off up the road we went. Thanks to the nice people in reception who let me dump my back for the duration of the game when those behind the bar wouldn't.
The very best of luck for the rest of the season.
