NEW TARGETMAN

Post by doogull »

I was today speaking to a Mr B Palk when I was purchasing some lino for my bathroom and we spent best part of an hour discussing the gulls and paul buckles relentless efforts in trying to sign a targetman to no avail but is confident of getting a forward on board for saturdays match he wouldn't elaborate on whom and what club it is but all he did say was it was the club are from the north, brilliant that narrows it down but he assured me that we are doing everything they can.

A club from the north of Torquay. So it's no one from Argyle then. Glad we narrowed it down to someone from one of the 90 other clubs.

He didn't say the north of England though, did he?!

I hear the north of Dijibuti is a hot bed for targetmen strikers.

Chesterfield striker Martin Gritton is available... :~D

(Yes, yes, I know he doesn't play for them anymore, but I'm not sure how far north Chester is and I can't be arsed to look it up)

Seriously though, we were linked by some to Pope of Rotherham and I think he fits the 'target man' bill fairly well. I know he is at the Vale and I am equally aware of his connections with them and his desire to remain at Vale park, but I'm sure he could be lured away by a few quid a week in his sky rocket.

Maybe it's Le Fondre? Maybe it's Jack Lester? Maybe it's Akinfattwat, he certainly isn't a fox in the box, but then, Gillingham isn't very far north.

Question is, do we really want a target man? Will it result in a return to the dreaded 4-5-1 and turn us into a team set up simply to whack 70 yard passes from Potter to target man X and hope for the best?

Matt.

Well Mr Palk isn't giving much away is he .... and you "worked on him" for nearly an hour? :S

Time for a guess I reckon .... targetman from the North,a good "age" (27), probably "affordable", known to Bucks from our BSP days and has been known to do particularly well against us in the past (hattrick for Halifax against us) and currently "on fire" for his present club with eleven goals in his last 10 starts ... so how about Jon Shaw at Gateshead FC - now you can't get much further North than that!!!!

We do need another type of centre forward. Tuesday night cried out for someone to stand up there make a nuisance and hold it up. We've got loads of pace in the side and with that focal point up top he could bring the likes of Robinson/Zebroski/Kee/Macklin/Stevens into play more.

Well I guess whoever it was we were after .... knocked us back again.

I do think we need to add one or two if we are serious about challenging for promotion as our squad is simply too small to sustain a real challenge in the closing months in my opinion. Let alone lacking in quality in one or two areas there just isn't the strength in depth and loss of form, tiredness, injuries and suspensions are surely going to catch up with us eventually.
