Weird and wonderful club names

Post by oldpedant »

Driving into Nottingham yesterday, I passed Gedling Miners Welfare's ground (East Midlands Counties Football League - tier 10) and their next fixture is against Thurnby Nirvana.

When I got back home and checked out this league, another team is Graham Street Prims.

Anyone know of any other wierd and wonderful club names? (Pub sides don't count)

I've always thought that Swindon Supermarine was a strange name for a team in that part of the country.

One of the two teams that merged to play as Swindon Supermarine happened to be called Supermarine FC and played on Supermarine Road - wonder if those who named the road had Vickers/Southampton connections??

The best named pub side of recent years has to be Enchance of Norfolk, commonly known as . . .

NORFOLK ENCHANCE

They used to make aircraft there Andy/Dave. The big Honda factory is now where it used to be, down in Stratton/Marston, If you look on Google maps that long tarmac strip to the east of the main assembly buildings is the former runway. I used to drive up the 419/361 on the way to work in the 80's when Honda first bought the site

I had wondered what was there before the Honda takeover - thanks for that Fletch.
