Our average attendance is a bit off due to the amount of freebie tickets, however it would still be much higher than at any time during my years supporting them since the 80s, although we did have decent crowds with Leroy here.I never thought we would ever get much more than 2000 ever again, so this season has been a revelation and has shown the appetite for Non League football and Torquay. Whether they’d go higher if we became a FL club again, who knows?
I agree with all the above posters, the PL is all wrapped up in a little bow, from the grounds to the pitches, the silly pyro, the pretty football, the only difference in most new stadiums seems to be the colour of their seats. People have been priced out, maybe they’re fed up of players ‘earning’ £250 000+ a week, even Championship players are on staggering amounts, maybe it’s the narratives being constantly pushed by the higher authorities, maybe it’s seeing people wearing the shirts of big clubs when they’ve never even set foot in the stadium, maybe it’s VAR or waiting for a decision, it kills the passion, changing the name of your ground. The Emirates just doesn’t evoke memories like Highbury used to.
For me, the little moments of quality in a game in our division are the ones I enjoy, those moments that get the Pop side cheering, I also like being close enough to see the players, hear what Wotton is shouting at them or the ref, in big grounds people at the back must just see little matchstick men.
Who knows but it’s fab news, as long as we’re getting consistent or increasing gates, it gives us more opportunity to get in the league, with the knowledge we’ll not be big enough to ever become one of those above clubs and keep our identity.
