First XI's average age

Post by robc »

I got thinking about this the other day, so I thought I'd work it out. The average age of what seems like our recognised first XI just now, which is:

Bevan, 31
Robbo, 24
Branston, 32
Ellis, 22
Nicho, 30
Zebs, 24
Manse, 28
Wroe, 25
Stevens, 24
O'Kane, 20
Benyon, 23

Works out at 25.7, now when was the last time we could say that? I'm 99% sure that in my time supporting the Gulls (16 years), we've never had more than 1 or 2 really promising youngsters in the team. In my opinion there are 4 or 5 in the team that we will end selling for decent money, which, coupled with the cup run, makes this a really positive time to be a Yellow. Also, factor in the only players (excluding loanees) who are really challenging for a first team place, Kee (20) and Lathrope (21), and the average drops to 24.9. Although you could obviously argue that slightly more players knocking on the door of the first team would be nice, it really can't be denied that the future is bright. The future is yellow.

(All these calculations and time spent on this post is all to avoid writing an essay, so I'd better get some interesting responses now!)

The average age of the current squad has got me thinking.

The people I've been slurping with recently are way over the top of an 18-30 package tour, but are some considerable years away from a bus pass.

SG Dave assures me he just looks that old due to a hard life. Nothing to do with the late nights overseeing the smooth running of the forum then ?

The novelty hasn't worn off yet, but when it does, you'll have aged another 10.

Look on the bright side, at least I'm not taking it to work, so Monday to Friday between 07.00 to 17.00, you get a break from the relentless twittering on. :)

Back on topic.

Factor in the ages of all the squad and the average age reduces further.

Trojan: Yeah I thought that too, but thought that it might be misrepresentative slightly, i.e, if every club did the average and included all the first yr pros you wouldn't really get a picture of how much they focus on youth, because they'd probably have loads of 16/17 year olds nowhere near the first team, but still in the squad. I doubt you could find any other L2 team with as young an average first team as us anyway... (Or any team doing well anyway)

I see what you mean, but I was referring to our immediate squad including Halpin, Macklin, Rowe-Turner, Palmer, Yeoman, Oastler and Hemmings.
