This is where the EPPP will hurt clubs like us in favour of the Premiership sides. 16 year old with potential, they can sign him up for peanuts up front with add-ons if he becomes a Premiership regular (worth millions). If he's that good a player then he would be in our first team within a year or two and get first team experience before earning a move upwards based on performance and not potential.

With this new system the most promising youngsters get hoovered up by Premiership clubs, at little risk to them given the fees, and only a handful will get first team opportunities. The majority will get loan spells aged 21 to get the experience they would have got at 17/18 if they had stayed put.

You can't blame the players, who will get more money and move to a bigger club earlier. However this deal was forced through by the Premiership clubs threatening to withhold the 'solidarity' payments, not because it is good for the lower leagues.

No, Yoevil Town used EPPP as an excuse to shut their youth acadamey down, they actually shut it because they were not producing players from it and were not long before EPPP was thought of and because they wanted to divert money they spent on their youth set up into their first team, Exeter took on a few ex-Yoevil players.

Problem Yoevil had was the likes of Cardiff, Bristol City are taking players from their catchment area, even both us and Exeter recruit from Taunton aswell, as said before the difference is the likes of Torquay and Exeter have chosen to place greater importance on youth and invested in it, where as Yoevil never did.

The only thing about EPPP lower league clubs do not like is the upfront compensation, thats why both CP Gull and Andy.C both make very good points, the upfront compensation our club will receive will at this point be very low, however the point not missed by Andy.C is should this lad make the grade at Villa that will trigger much larger payments in the future, so this could well turn into a very good deal for TUFC indeed.

The compensation is a bug bear with EPPP however in terms youth development it is actually a very good thing, no longer can clubs like TUFC get away with pretending to run a youth set up, now we have to have a proper training centre, proper equipment, properly quailfied coachs, and a structured youth set up with education fitness and well being all a big part of youth development now.

As many will know I used work in youth development football at local level as a coach, manager and then moved into scouting, I have recently gone back into football as manager of a team that will U16 next season, youth development in this country at all levels was shocking it had to change, there is never a gaunrantee, this lad could stay with TUFC and not make the grade, I have 5 ex-tufc acadmey lads in my team who got all the way through to the end of their U14 season only to be released and know a few who got to youth-pro level and never made it, it can be very cut throat aswell, Exeter released 16 year old keeper a few days later Cheltenham signed him.

It is a decision for each lad, a lot of the bigger clubs are now opening development centres right the way across the country, I know Bristol City were going to open one in Taunton and Cardiff plan to aswell, it won't be long before mnay other clubs have these centres across the south west.

Do young players want to be a big fish in a little pond or a tiny fish and a very big pond.

The plus side is at least we are seeing the benefits of a proper youth setup. And as someone has mentioned, from his point of view there is more chance of him rising through the ranks at Villa than, say, Chelsea or City.

Villa have agreed to pay us £50K for Prynn as an initial fee with further payments if he makes it as a pro with them according to the Herald Express today.

Any which way you look at it, £50k is half of last year's trading deficit.

Good news for the club and as has been said in the article, what more motivation do the other youth players need, seeing one of their own taken on by a premier league club!

Are we suggesting that the club should have kept Ling/Taylor just save a pay-out, and conitued to enjoy such a

brand of football, seen season ticket sales damaged and gates continue to fall, remeber it was Martin Ling who said Rene Howe came into last close season meeting looking for a new deal, if Lingy had offered it, we would now be getting a fee for him wouldn't we.

Sorry, back on topic, this is a good deal for the club £50k upfront for lad who has not played a game, which ever way you look at it, that money will go a small way to easing any financial pressure on the club.

It will also raise the profile of our youth set up, we are already competeing across cornwall and Devon with Plymouth and Exeter for young talent, and into Somerset we are not just competeing with our Devon rivals but the Bristol clubs and on into the M4 corridor, talented young players seeing lads go from our youth set up into the premier league may just give us an edge.

One reason why Crewe are sucsessful in attracting players in their area ahead some much bigger neigbours.

I would suggest 50k is excellent news for a small club like ours. We may want to keep such exciting young talent, but 50k???????

This thread has just reminded of something a few years ago (about 15 really) My opinion is that it was a grey day when John James went to Plymouth over a standoff over travelling expenses. For the next 10 years I have seen his picture in the Herald and Independent with lads who were signing forms etc ...................including Darren Bastow I think.
