I am glad the transfer window is finally closed properly. No more messing about, it doesn't matter now where the players have come from or where they might be going to, for the next month and a bit we have a settled squad of players. There are five tough games before the window is opened again. We need the squad and the fans to hunker down and find the fighting spirit. The answer to our problems is among us. If the manager can gel the squad together, keep them calm, keep their heads up and get them playing at their best we can start looking forwards and looking upwards.

I'm assuming as someone has already mentioned as well that some of these people have day jobs? So couldn't train full time? Are we preparing ourselves to go part time? Sorry to be negative but I believe it'll be moments like these when we look back in a couple of months / years and think yeah... We seemed to be pretty much rolling over and dying then.
Surely everyone is an amateur player at some point? Does it really matter if they're 14 or 40? If they've got the ability and the mindset, then they'll succeed. If not, they'll fail.

From the videos online of Sean Finch, he looks a class above anyone else on the pitch, and that includes the Watcombe games when he didn't score. His control of the ball is far better than the majority players I've seen play professionally for Torquay and he seems to have a natural ability to read the game and ghost into the right spots.

I don't think giving him the chance is a bad thing, but I do agree that he'd need to join us professionally, not as a part timer.
Luke.

12 months ago, going nowhere in the league and with some money, we could have taken a risk on local players. They might have developed in a full time setting and been viable squad players. Not every one will be an Ian Wright or Jamie Vardy but we might find a Kevin Hill or Matt Hockley.

Now though? We already have 26 odd players, a few of which are local and not earning much. I don't see Gerring offering more than Odofin or Finch more than Yeoman or Prynn, all of whom aren't playing anyway. Our budget is small, and our squad is bloated & lacking quality players in the first XI. We have six months to sort this or we'll be playing regional football next season - that's how desperate we are now.

It's nothing against the players themselves, or the principle (which is good). It's just that we need proven players to make an instant impact or we're going out of the professional leagues. Next season, after a clear out, if you want them to be numbers 17 and 18 in the squad, not earning much but hoping to develop them, fine. This season, numbers mid twenty in the squad, they're offering nothing.

sadly we have seen this before when dave webb brought in south devon league players and this is a lot worse than that, the worry is that if we go down to the conference south we will have to go part time with sub 1,000 gates will we be able to afford to stay at plainmoor, this is reality im afraid, call in negativity but ive watched my team for 50 years now and it saddens me to see what is happening. the squad we have offer as gulliball says, NOTHING!and bringing in south devon league players will also offer nothing, and yes as others have said we have no money so we cant sign decent players.
and yes i have noticed we that we dont have that privilage because somewhere along the line the people that ran the club fu--ed it up.

Whilst I'm not expecting him to be the next Jamie Vardy, at best he could turn out to be another Kieffer Moore, who has had a decent career so far after appearing for Paignton Saints, or - at worst - he could be another Karl Baker and disappear back into local football as quickly as he arrived.

Stucolls wrote:h ow is it anything but negative? why shouldnt they be given a chance? we arent a league side anymore incase you forgot, we dont have the privilege of picking the best lower league players anymore or attracted top loan signings. We have to deal with what we have and where we are, and if that means giving the best local talent a shot then so be it. I cant wait for Finchy and Ben to make themselves Gull's regulars and stuff all the criticism down the throat of those spouting it!

It makes no difference what surface your playing on, Chelsea played on a pitch in Israel the other night that was worse than King George, yet those players are in the champions league!

Give the boys a chance, and while we are at it, sign up Scott Corderoy in goal!
If he shifts about 5 stone, thought it was big nev in goal second half today!

these sort of players will be the only ones that the club will be able to afford in the conference south, they would earn more working at there daytime jobs.

He has shifted a stone already in the past few weeks while he has been in and around the club playing friendlies etc. He is the first to admit he needs to, but his shot stopping is superb and his distribution is top class

Yes, when us Gulls fans said we are crying out for an experienced big imposing keeper, we didn't mean one over 20 stone. :)

I've watched Scot and the other keeper that played for Bideford the other night as he played for Buckland over the last few tears I think that they would do a job if called on in a one off and maybe a couple of games. But there again you don't rate my views. I am not saying that I would like that to happen though.

Don't think we've got any choice we need to support the club.

Bristol City in the 80's did the same under Terry Cooper when they went bankrupt, they had a small squad.
