Elsewhere in the bay

Post by Paigntonian »

In the excitement of Saturday’s game at Plainmoor another team from the bay was vying for promotion namely AFC Brixham who won their playoff to move up to the lower division in the Southern League from the Western League.
I was a local referee from 1991 to 2018 and remember refereeing Brixham who then played in the lowest tier of the English pyramid- the south Devon league.
By merging Brixham United FC and Brixham Villa FC to form AFC Brixham the club has risen through the peninsula leagues and the Western League. They have significantly improved the ground including installing floodlights so perhaps in looking at setting up pre-season friendly fixtures AFC Brixham could be booked in for the Gulls.
PS - those of you looking for a piece of sporting action this coming Saturday could go to Astley Park in Brixham where Brixham rugby club are playing in the semifinal of the Papa John cup with a final game at Twickenham the following weekend being the prize for the winner.

The Fish" are my First team...then The Gulls...and for some reason I have forgotten Blackpool. I have seen them when visiting and the Gulls were playing away. Dave Burrell was their keeper back in the 60-70s who also ran the Aquarium in Torquay and would take me and his son Dean to watch.
Supporting local football isn't glamorous but you meet some great people. If you get the chance take the trip round the Bay and take in the grass roots vibes. COYF!

Congrats to AFC Brixham on their well-earned promotion! It’s amazing to see their rise from the South Devon League to the Southern League, with the floodlights upgrade showing their commitment. A friendly with the Gulls would’ve been a great spectacle—hope it happens next season! Anyone know how Brixham’s settling into the new division?
